THINK YOU CAN ONLY AFFORD USED GEAR?
THE ROOK IS A COMPLETE CANOPY & CONTAINER SYSTEM
FOR JUMPERS WHO WANT BRAND NEW GEAR AT A USED GEAR PRICE.
We understand that BASE gear can be expensive, but life-saving equipment is not the place to cut corners to save a few bucks. Jumpers on a
budget deserve high quality, reliable, American made BASE gear too! The Apex Rook is the answer for cost-sensitive jumpers looking to purchase a brand new, built to your measurements, complete all-around system. How are we able to price these systems so attractively? By simplifying our existing designs and building in bulk. Here’s how it works:
Rook containers are built on the Summit platform. They share the Summit quality and functionality, with a few of the “extras” removed: the through loop closing option, riser cover tuck tabs, and hidden pack tray pocket. Rook containers will still include a stash bag pocket, MAG bridle guide and Magnet Bridle, bottomless corners, D30 back protection compatibility, a hook knife, and a stiffener insert for your pin protector flap on terminal and wingsuit jumps. We believe that this container offers more features, a better design, and better build quality than many other “premium” systems on the market.
Rook canopies are built on the FLiK II platform in 0-3 cfm (F-111) fabric, and utilize different load tape material. Rook canopies will not include a Multi-2 Tail Pocket Support System and come standard with a traditional tail pocket and large mesh slider. All other standard Apex canopy features are included.
Single Rook systems will not be available for custom orders. We will build Rooks in runs of 3+ when we have capacity in our production queue. Rook containers will be all black with a colored Rook logo embroidered to match the center cell of the canopy. Rook canopies will be all black with a colored center cell matching your container embroidery. Rooks will be produced in popular sizes (e.g. 240, 260, 280) and with popular accent colors (e.g. blue, red, green, yellow, etc.).
All Rook containers will be built with open harnesses, meaning that we will close your Rook harness to fit your exact measurements. The lead time on an in-stock Rook will be 1-2 weeks while we close your harness.
If you are a BASE school, gear rental business, or group of jumpers all looking to order Rook systems we will put a custom run of Rooks into production for you. Minimum order of 3 systems required. Some customization may be available when purchasing 3 or more systems, though additional charges may apply.
Every Rook is handcrafted from start to finish in our Southern California facility. Each container undergoes two thorough quality control inspections. First the independent container components are inspected: harness, back pad, leg pads, cover flaps, and other elements. The second container inspection is conducted after all components have been merged into a complete container. Every Rook canopy is given a thorough 535-point quality control inspection. All quality control work is performed by an Independent Rigger.
Apex BASE has a reputation for building consistent, high quality, thoroughly proven gear and the Rook is no exception. It took 4 years of development for us to design a low-cost, high quality, all-around system that we would be proud to put our name on. It’s finally here, and we couldn’t be more proud of the result.
We believe that our container designs are the best available on the market. Our pin protector flap offers optimal bridle protection during terminal jumps, high resistance to pin lock configurations while slider-off, and an adaptable design which can be adjusted to suit every style of jump. Rook jumpers will enjoy the same fundamental design and functionality found on our Summit and TL containers.
TRADITIONAL CLOSING OPTION
The Rook is closed utilizing traditional top & bottom closing loops for easy closure and a comfortable canopy fit.
PIN PROTECTOR FLAP INSERT
Terminal jumpers, trackers, and wingsuit jumpers will appreciate the stiffener insert we include with every container. The stiffener can be installed quickly to provide additional security to the pin protector flap for high airspeed flights. A pocket is built-in to the container to store the insert when not in use.
ADAPTABLE PIN PROTECTOR FLAP
The pin protector flap was designed to operate unhindered on all jumps. There is no need to open the pin protector flap for any freefall jump however, extra-cautious static-line jumpers will appreciate the option to cleanly tuck the flap entirely out of sight. No more floppy open pin protector flaps on exit!
REMOVABLE D30 BACK PROTECTION
Apex was the first to build spine protection into a container system. The readily available D30 pad has proven to be an effective method of protection and Apex builds an independent pocket (separate from the stash bag pocket) to accommodate these pads as part of the standard container package. Our D30 insert can be removed and installed easily on unpacked containers.
SOFT BOTTOMLESS CORNERS
Bottomless corners improve canopy extraction during wingsuit, tracking, and head low deployments. During development we started experimenting with “soft” bottomless corners which were easier to build and less bulky than traditional bottomless corners. What we discovered was a design that we absolutely fell in love with! All of the functionality of stiff bottomless corners in a lighter and simpler package.
While 3 ring cutaway systems serve a valuable purpose for many BASE jumpers, modern trends have shown a tremendous growth in the popularity of integrated riser systems. Their light weight, low bulk, added strength and simplicity have led to them being the most popular riser selection. In light of this trend, and because we feel that integrated risers are a superior option for most jumpers, we have made them standard on all of our containers.
TWO TOGGLE SETTINGS
You mean two brake settings, right? No. We mean two TOGGLE settings. We offer a lengthened toggle setting specifically for sliderup jumps. The additional length in this setting allows a better full flight position when the brake lines are routed through the slider grommets. The second toggle setting is a bit shorter and designed to optimize those familiar slider-off flight characteristics. Both are fixed loops making toggle changes quick and easy. The fixed loops (No more knots!) make it compatible with most releasable toggles, like the WLO and others.
VTEC BOTTOM SURFACE VENTS
It’s not as simple as asking how many vents a canopy has. The reality is that vents are complicated and their impact on opening speeds will vary greatly depending on vent size and valve construction. Apex has engineered a design using 3 vents spread over 5 cells to provide outstanding inflow characteristics and consistent closure, making it ideal for a wide range of BASE applications.
